ReachOut is a mentoring charity (No.1096492) working with children in
disadvantaged communities to raise aspirations and help them grow in character
and competence. They improve self-confidence and develop numeracy,
literacy, communication and memory skills, whilst reinforcing core values
of fairness, self-control, good judgement and staying power.
They do this
through one-to-one mentoring with positive role models and team activities to
promote learning, trust and responsibility. Their structured, focused
programme gives over a thousand children every year the confidence and skills
they need for a brighter future.
In 2004 Hackney Council commissioned
ReachOut to carry out a mentoring project to provide male role models and
support for boys at risk of disengagement in the borough. This project became
the ReachOut Club which now runs in several schools across Hackney, Camden and
Tower Hamlets.
The charity continued to grow and now supports more
than 1200 children and young people each year, helping them to grow in character
and competence. They have developed three mentoring programmes, the Club,
Academy and Junior Mentors, which enable them to provide one-to-one support for
young people from the age of 9 to 18. Many of the young people have gone on to
become mentors themselves, supporting others and helping to change their own
communities for the better.
Tom's Trust has helped to fund
ReachOut's Summer
Programme. This is a full-time project in Hackney offering maths and English
booster classes, fun activities and trips, allowing young people to spend their
summer holidays constructively. The programme runs mornings and afternoons,
Monday to Friday for two weeks during the summer holidays.
